Rests on 3 scallop shell supports mounted with leafy bits and strewn with same. An impressive centerpiece-quality bivalve with a tidal flotsam-jetsam arrangement that anticipates Narragansett. Twelve Edwardian Bread & Butter plates. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1916. Each: Plain circular well and four curved sides with double-scroll corners. Chased and engraved ornament: Fluid leaf set in scrolling-leaf frame alternating with quatrefoil leaf over stippled lunettes. Rosette-inset guilloche rim. Engraved armorial with Latin motto “Patriis virtutibus” (that is, “By hereditary virtues”). A suitably aristocratic sentiment for such a sumptuous set.
