Snuff boxes were the symbol of class and social grace back in the day. It’s no wonder these antique pieces have become incredibly popular among collectors. These ornate boxes did have a practical use: people needed a place to store their tobacco. Pipes, cigarettes, and cigars have gained popularity in modern times, but prior to that, people would snuff tobacco. This addictive habit quickly become a social ritual that European elites greatly enjoyed. Antique snuff boxes needed to be fashionable to showcase the user’s elevated status.
