There is a tradition dating back to the 18th century to give babies sterling silver items. The phrase “born with a silver spoon in your mouth” stems from the popularity of gifting sterling silver to babies. There were several significant reasons behind this. Silversmiths would create sterling silver toys because they wouldn’t break as easily as their wooden and clay counterparts. But sterling silver baby mugs also symbolized wealth and good health. Silver has toxic effects on bacteria without the harmful side effects of other metals, such as mercury.
