In the early days of the sterling silver salt and pepper shakers, they were known as casters. You would “cast” the pepper and other spices onto your food. They were far more sanitary than their predecessors: the salt cellar. People could invest in a single set, and it could be passed around the table without worry. Some have ornately decorated feet, some are balanced on a single square or circular pedestal, and most were engraved with the family’s monogram. You can find vintage sterling silver salt and pepper shakers and more at Nelson & Nelson antiques. Visit our website to browse our selection, or stop by our New York City store to see us in person.
