Sterling Holloware: Salt and Peppers

Japanese silver salt and pepper, ca 1890. Open salt round and bellied with short plain foot. Shaker ginger jar-form with pierced and threaded cover. Both have allover hand hammering with applied floral ornament: salt has tree trunk and blossoming branches. The shaker has iris flowers in eddying water. A charming Meiji-era pair. Marked with Japanese characters. Very good condition.

Pair of American sterling silver figural salt and pepper shakers, ca 1920. Each: A waddling goose with imbricated feathers and elongated neck. Scaly talons mounted to threaded cover. Breast pierced. One bird looks to the side, the other looks back. Fun waddlers to enliven the next dinner party. Marked “Sterling”. Very good condition.

Stylish sterling silver figural salt and pepper shakers. Two flowers set in stand. Each flower has a curvilinear stem, round bud with threaded double-leaf cover (bottom leaf pierced). Stand has two holders in form of wrapped leaves rooted in tooled soil. An original design by the noted Italian maker. Marks include “Gianmaria / Buccellati / Italy” and encircled “925”.
