Russian 875 silver novelty cigar box. Rectangular with flat, hinged, and tabbed cover. Trompe l’oeil lightly gilt wood panels with realistic grain and tax stamps. Gilt interior. Based on the packaging of the very real Julian Alvarez in Havana, whose brand was La Flor de Henry Clay. Alvarez was a prize-winning exhibitor at world’s fairs, and his famous smoke was immortalized by Kipling in the line “There’s calm in a Henry Clay”. Marks include Kokoshnik (1896-1908).
