Russian 875 silver cigar box, 1886. Rectangular with straight sides; cover flat and hinged. Gilt interior. Trompe l’oeil wood panels with realistic grain and tax stamps for Havana “Imperiales”. On cover top are medallion portraits including one of Emperor Napoleon III of France. A nice memento from the reign of Alexander III, the Slavophile tsar with French sympathies. Marks include dated assay stamp. Excellent condition.

Olympian sterling silver water pitcher. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York. Globular with drum-form neck, small lip spout, and leaf-mounted scroll bracket handle. Exterior encircled with chased and embossed frieze of love-making and harp-strumming nymphs, gods, and cherubs. A suggestive pastoral scene set in foliate rinceaux. Second narrow and ornamental rinceaux band on neck.

Russian 875 novelty cigarette box, ca 1880. Rectangular with straight sides and flat and hinged cover. Gilt-washed interior. Trompe l’oeil wood panels with realistic grain and tax stamps. Based on the packaging for Pheresli, a cigarette brand evocative of raffish chic. A similar box is described in a novel by fin-de-siecle writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Marked. Turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau glass vase by historic Loetz with engraved silver overlay. Cylindrical body with bellied top and spread foot. Overlay in form of flower heads with entwined petals and leaves (top) and leafing scrollwork (bottom) as well as teardrop pilasters. Glass is iridescent green with yellow and blue shimmer. Italian grand tour cast silver sculpture, ca 1910. Roman gladiators clash with swords drawn. The apparent victor, helmeted and armored, stands with sandaled foot on his victim’s thigh. The fallen man’s retaliatory thrust is blocked by a shield-bearing arm. A dramatic fight to the death that is perfectly posed to show off impressive male musculature. The group is mounted to a rectangular base supported by corner paw supports. Marked. Very good condition with deep patina.
