Cold War-era sterling silver desk globe, ca 1970s. In c-scroll frame mounted to Baroque dolphin support in turn mounted to stepped and round foot. Everyone’s there, not only Us and Them (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) but secondary players like Ceylon and Rhodesia. The world as it used to be. A great icebreaker for office peace talks, and source of reflections on the transience of power.

American sterling silver centerpiece bowl, ca 1870. Bellied with applied cartouche (vacant) and 4 shell-mounted scroll supports. Tapering shoulder engraved with scrolling leaf border. Open scrollwork side handles inset with cast medallion heads. One is a mustachioed man in plumed hat; the other a lady with noble visage. An unusual example of this popular and varied pattern. John Carter Brown (1797-1874) of Rhode Island was a noted book collector. In the decade after his death his widow commissioned from Tiffany a custom flatware service of which these pieces are a part. The traditional pattern with modern elements was designed by Charles Grosjean, and comprises a paddle terminal with double-sided shells.
