John Carter Brown (1797-1874) of Rhode Island was a noted book collector. In the decade after his death his widow commissioned from Tiffany a custom flatware service of which these pieces are a part. The traditional pattern with modern elements was designed by Charles Grosjean, and comprises a paddle terminal with double-sided shells.
