Pair of rare and wonderful coin silver open salts. Made by Gorham in Providence, ca 1860. Each: Ovoid bowl with 4 scallops and raised circular foot mounted to stepped quatrefoil base. On base are two cast fox figures, seated on haunches with tails encircling foot. They peer out with forepaws tentatively resting on edge. A touching depiction of animal alertness. Hallmarked as well as retailer’s initials S&M. Fine condition.
