Rectilinear handle with flying crane, carp in wave, and flowers set in shaped frames and on wavy and patchwork grounds. Blade had scalloped top and engraved blossoming branch. A beautiful piece in this pattern, which was first produced in 1880. Late 19th-century hallmark. Excellent condition.

Also plain are foot rim, neck, and cover sides. Cover top has circular frame (vacant). Fully marked with Chinese characters and letters HC for Hung Chong, who was active in Canton and Shanghai. Japonesque sterling silver and mixed metal bowl. Made by Whiting in New York, ca 1880. Bellied bowl on 3 trefoil-mounted balls. Engraved and acid-etched marine motifs, including plants and shells, heightened with applied mussel and snail. Applied mixed metal crab with gracefully scrolled legs curled over the rim. Engraved armorial.

A beautiful piece with plenty of period flavor by one of New York’s other mixed metal makers. Hallmark includes no. 904D. Excellent condition.
