This is a magnificent heavy gauge sterling silver centerpiece in the style of the Rococco Revival, beautifully decorated all around the base with figural putti of the very finest quality signed by the renowned French silversmith, A. Aucoc of Paris. The large shell-shaped centerpiece bowl has an attractively undulating wave-like edge and rests upon a short, leafy central column which emerges from an elongated ovoid base augmented by truly exceptional decoration. The surface of the base has been expertly designed and crafted to resemble a rock-like formation embellished by scrolling organic forms of extraordinary quality. It has been surrounded by a group of 4 adorable putti cavorting playfully all around the central column. Each has been made with great skill; the faces all having delightfully mischievous expressions, their curly hair disarmingly tousled and their fingers and toes all beautifully and meticulously detailed. Each one of these charmingly chubby little cherubs is engaged in a separate activity and each one has different facial features, each exhibiting distinctively different personalities and all emparting a touch of charm and whimsy to this incredibly well-crafted and beautifully imagined scene. The quality of the workmanship on all the decorative elements is to the very highest standards and even the smallest detail has been skillfully and expertly crafted with exquisite precision. As a single piece the centerpiece bowl would easily qualify as a museum-quality item. The centerpiece is in excellent condition; the silver has a lovely and extremely pleasing patina and the definition on all the decoration is clear, crisp and beautifully defined. The base has been signed A. Aucoc and has also been marked with a diamond shape containing a fleur-de-lys. This truly remarkable set would add a touch of sophistication and elegance to any setting and would be of interest to any connoisseur of the very finest quality sterling silver. The plateau measures approx. 39 ½” x 22 ½” x 3 ½” tall and the centerpiece bowl measures approx. 19” X 9” X 10” tall. This piece weighs an unbelievable 300 troy ounces.
