This is a magnificent sterling silver tureen by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. This oval tureen stands on an oval base with a band of shell and acanthus leaf designs and with four scroll supports with leafy embellishments. The body is elaborately decorated with chasing and repoussé, the lower portion has a strapwork design with leaves at intervals, while the center portion features a large, vacant scroll cartouche on either side, with floral bouquets and lion’s heads in strapwork. This tureen has two lovely leafy, scroll side handles with leafy masks. The rim of the tureen has a beautiful scroll border with lion’s heads on each side, and it has a gold wash interior. All of the decoration is exquisitely detailed and expertly crafted by the premier silversmiths at Gorham. The chasing and repoussé work is extremely crisp and sculptural. It is in excellent condition and has the maker’s mark of Gorham and the words sterling and 6 pints, the tureen is marked with pattern number A8085 and the date symbol for 1899, and the retailer’s mark of Theodore B. Starr, New York. The tureen measures approx. 8” high and 14 3/4” long over the handles, and weighs approx. 73 troy ounces. This gorgeous serving piece is an example of Gorham’s finest work and is a classic design. This outstanding antique silver tureen is also particularly versatile and could be used as a decorative centerpiece as well as a practical serving dish.
