Victorian Classical sterling silver centerpiece. Made by Robert Garrard in London in 1863. Lobed oval-shaped bowl interspersed with flowers. Open and twisting leaf-mounted end handles with cast figures of fairy enchantresses, their loose drapery revealing bare bosoms and shapely limbs. Bowl supported by 4 cast cherubs who bend and stagger under the weight, their backs turned to a coiled serpent. Lobed oval base on 4 volute-scroll supports base. Beaded, guilloche, and leaf borders. Oval cartouches with scrolling leaves and flowers and round frames (vacant). Flowerpots on pedestals and gaping, glaring chimera masks. Midcentury sumptuousness by an important silversmith.

Coat or arms for noble Polish family Potocki, presumably for Alfred Józef Potocki (1817-1889), a diplomat and benefactor, who was prime minister of Poland from 1869 to 1870. His connection to England was through his sister, who married the Austrian ambassador to the Court of St James.

Fully marked. Excellent condition with nice patina.

Overall dimensions: H 17 1/2 x W 22 x D 12 in. Heavy weight: 220 troy ounces. #BV892
