Pair of exuberantly Classical gilt sterling silver candlesticks. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York. Each: Open shaft comprising feathered vertical leaves with leaf-capped volute-scroll terminals, supporting bead-and-reel ring to which is mounted a fluted urn with leaf-capped volute scroll brackets. Socket has pierced palmettes and rosettes in trapezoidal frames interspersed with acorns. Bobeche detachable. Rests on 3 outsized scallop-shell supports. The austere design vocabulary of ancient Greece and Rome ramped up for Gilded Age America. Engraved on underside “M.C.T. / 1902”.

Originally part of a dessert service that was designed by Paulding Farnham and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, and again the following year in Buffalo at the Pan-American Exposition. Very much the showpieces you’ll want to bring out over and over.

Fully marked including pattern no. 13934 (first produced in 1899), director’s letter T (1892-1902), and stamps for both world’s fairs. Excellent condition with beautiful toning.
