Twelve sterling silver dinner forks. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1886.

John Carter Brown (1797-1874) of Rhode Island was a noted book collector. In the decade after his death his widow commissioned from Tiffany a custom flatware service of which these pieces are a part. The traditional pattern with modern elements was designed by Charles Grosjean, and comprises a paddle terminal with double-sided shells. Shoulder has stylized leaf and heel has tiered shell-inspired motif. Terminal front has the family coat of arms. Terminal back has interlaced script monogram.

The Brown family had deep roots in Colonial America, and much of the library acquired by John Carter related to that era. When it came to silver, though, they sought out the most fashionable maker of the day. (Cf. Hood et al. Tiffany Silver Flatware, 1999, p. 297-8).

Fully marked including patent year (1886) and director’s letter M (1873-91). Very good condition with nice patina.

Note: There are 4 lots of 12 dinner forks or available as a lot of 48.

Dimensions: H 7 7/8 in. Extra heavy total weight: 42 troy ounces. #BR725
