German Gothic parcel gilt silver tankard, ca 1870. Traditional form with c-scroll handle, leaf-capped and scrolled thumb rest, hinged and domed beehive cover, and four large splayed ball supports. Low-relief frieze depicting king surrounded by spear-bearing infantry. In background is stone fortress. Balls have chased strapwork. An inspired evocation of olden-days Teutonic warriors. Good heft for swinging back a yeasty brew. Fully marked including alloy 13 lot (that is, 812 silver). Excellent condition.
