Sterling Holloware

Turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau glass vase with engraved silver overlay. Made by Alvin Corporation in Providence. Tall baluster with flared rim and short foot. Overlay in form twisted tendrils entwined and overlaid with flower heads. Glass is green. Silver fully marked including maker’s stamp and no. G3219/6. Very good condition with nice patina.

Chinese silver mug, ca 1865. Straight and upward tapering sides with dense low-relief frieze: Spearmen and swordsmen on foot and horse thrust and lunge and, in some cases, fall in battle. Applied armorial shield with engraved presentation dated “May 4th 1865”. S-scroll handle in form of scaly dragon with horned head peering over rim. Marked. Very good condition with deep patina.

Market-fresh Aesthetic sterling silver tea kettle on stand. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1910. Ovoid body with raised, flat, and hinged cover and stained-wood beehive finial. Tapering socket with detachable bobeche. Ribboned swags. Fine fluting that shimmers in candlelight. Fully marked including maker's stamp, pattern no. 19187 (first produced in 1916), order no. 1784, director’s letter m, and phrase “Reproduction Original by John Parsons & Co. Sheffield 1784”. Edwardian sterling silver cup. Made by Henry Frazer in London in 1901.Round bowl with gently flared rim, curved bottom, and inset foot. Ring handles with flat and tapering caps. Fully marked including retailer’s stamp (“Rowlands & Frazer / 146 Regent Street W”). Very good condition.

Victorian Classical sterling silver bowl. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1884. Solid oval well. Sides open with arcade surmounted by floral scrollwork and oval scroll end handles. Asymmetrical rim. Beaded. Rests of 4 leaf-mounted paw supports. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, pattern no. 7853 (first produced in 1884), and director’s letter M (1873-91). Excellent condition.

German Rococo silver gilt sleigh. Imported to England in 1899 by Berthold Muller. Ovoid bowl with chased and open scrolls and flowers on leafing-scroll stretchers. Mounted to front is scrolled cartouche (vacant) with irregular leaf surround. A frothy, fantasy vehicle piloted by a cherub exuberantly waving a banner overhead. Hanau maker’s stamp B. Neresheimer & Söhne. English sterling import marks with Chester assay stamp. Very good condition with nice toning.

Pair of desirable Chrysanthemum sterling silver covered serving dishes. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York.

Each: Oval well, curved and tapering sides, and scalloped rim with applied leaf-and-flower ornament. Domed cover with scalloped rim and imbricated leaf border applied to top. Flower-wrapped ring finial with leaf-mount and bead-and-reel border. Finial twist lock for converting cover to second serving dish. A sumptuous pair—or quartet—in the historic Japonesque pattern.

Fabulous Japanese silver teapot, ca 1890. Globular with dragons on roiling waves. Dragon handle with talon mounts. Spout same with projecting talons “puncturing” the surface. Raised cover with dragon head finial. A dramatic vessel with fierce, scaly beasts to slay the conventions of tea party gentility. Marked Konoike, a Yokohama maker whose work is in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Excellent condition.

Pair of turn-of-the-century cast silver busts of ancien regime courtiers. The woman evokes a Baroque beauty from the reign of Louis XIV with an imperious face softened with ringlets, a necklace of walnut-sized pearls around a bare throat, and a low-cut bow-tied bodice. The man belongs to the late 18th century with ribbon-tied wig and face exuding calm and serenity, oblivious to the horror to come. Both appear to be unmarked. Probably German. Very good condition.

Chinese export silver mug, ca 1850. Straight and upward tapering sides applied with leafing bamboo on stippled ground. Branch-form handle and rims. Applied rondel engraved with single-letter monogram in buckled belt. On underside is engraved “H. J. T. / 1855”. Interior gilt washed. Chinese mark and initials KHC for Khe Cheong, a Canton silversmith and retailer active from ca 1830s-70s. Very good condition.

George III sterling silver double barrel cup. Made by Charles Aldridge and Henry Green in London in 1770. Barrel form with clusters of raised “hoops”. Interior gilt washed. Splits apart to form two cups. One cup has armorial and motto “Whither Will Ye”. A portable communal vessel for grog or ale. Both cups fully marked. Good condition with deep patina and tight seal.
