Each: Oval well, curved and tapering sides, and scalloped rim with applied leaf-and-flower ornament. Domed cover with scalloped rim and imbricated leaf border applied to top. Flower-wrapped ring finial with leaf-mount and bead-and-reel border. Finial twist lock for converting cover to second serving dish. A sumptuous pair—or quartet—in the historic Japonesque pattern.

Raised cover with dragon head finial. A dramatic vessel with fierce, scaly beasts to slay the conventions of tea party gentility. Marked Konoike, a Yokohama maker whose work is in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Excellent condition.

The woman evokes a Baroque beauty from the reign of Louis XIV with an imperious face softened with ringlets, a necklace of walnut-sized pearls around a bare throat, and a low-cut bow-tied bodice. The man belongs to the late 18th century with ribbon-tied wig and face exuding calm and serenity, oblivious to the horror to come. Both appear to be unmarked. Probably German. Very good condition.

Applied rondel engraved with single-letter monogram in buckled belt. On underside is engraved “H. J. T. / 1855”. Interior gilt washed. Chinese mark and initials KHC for Khe Cheong, a Canton silversmith and retailer active from ca 1830s-70s. Very good condition.
