- Cosmic explosions create silver and gold. At the end of a star's life, it grows to about 10 times the size of our sun and explodes. These eruptions are called supernovae and produce gold and silver.
- In at least 14 different languages, the words "money" and "silver" mean the same exact thing!
- Silversmiths in the 19th and 20th centuries marked their sterling silver items with either the word "Sterling" or the number "925."
- Jewelers use two precious metals more frequently than others. If you guessed that those two are the alloys silver and gold -- you guessed correctly.
- Because pure silver is so soft, it's not exactly ideal for making tableware or jewelry, which is why these items are made of sterling silver -- an alloy that's comprised of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper (usually -- sometimes, craftsmen will use other metals, too).
