Rare sterling silver flask. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1882. Oval with curved sides and flat front and back. On front is seahorse with ribbed body and volute-scroll tail floating amongst seagrass. Back engraved with interlaced script monogram. Allover spot-hammered ground. Short neck with ball bearing-style beading. Hinged, threaded, and cork-lined cover. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, pattern no. 6855 (first produced in 1882), and director’s letter M (1873-91). Cover raised and chamfered with twist-lock ring handle. Handle, covers, and rim gadrooned with scallop shells and leafing scrolls. A gorgeous twosome—make that foursome because the covers convert to bowls. Fully marked. Excellent condition.
