Art Nouveau sterling silver and glass inkwell. Made by William B. Kerr in Newark, ca 1890. Clear rectilinear block body with diaper ornament cut to underside. Well has four curved sides and curved bottom. Short neck in sterling silver collar as is hinged and girdled cover. Concave shoulder with corner mounts comprising Classical goddess heads with crown and flowing tresses. Haunting and rarified desk companions. Fully marked and numbered 886. Very good condition.

At each corner a twisted Renaissance column with vase finial. Cover hinged with fixed beaded-ring finial. Set in top is micromosaic plaque depicting the Roman forum—hundreds of tesserae arranged in the image of a grand tour icon. Box and cover interior silk lined. Condition: Rocks slightly.
