Gorham Mixed Metals 8 Nut Dishes Sterling Silver C 1880

This Nut Dish Set was made in 1880. It is hallmarked with Gorham’s hallmark and date letter “M” for the year 1880, along with “sterling and other metals” and the pattern number 1660. The set was manufactured during the Japonism movement in decorative arts, which took place circa 1870 through 1890. The set incorporates Japanese motifs and methods of manufacture. Each dish is of circular shape, the base is hand hammered, rim is applied with cast band of geometric design, the body and interior of each is applied with floral and foliate decoration of various metals including gilt silver and copper. The interior of each dish is silver gilt. Mixed Metal silver pieces are highly collected today. It is rare to find a complete set in its original condition. This set could be used in many other ways other than for nuts. They could be used as saltcellars, ashtrays, olive dishes or just catch-alls. Diameter: 2 1/2 inches. Weight: 7.20 Troy Ounces.
