| This magnificent Neo-classical oval centerpiece is hallmarked with a French retailer’s hallmark and import marks to show that the piece was imported into France from one of the countries now known as the EEC. The silver gilt frame is of oval shape with two Medusa head and entwined snake handles. The frame is openwork, decorated with cast and chased mermaids centering cornucopias, the whole raised on a frieze form frame on four bun feet. The superbly crafted frame holds an etched glass bowl which is expertly molded to the shape of the frame, and centers a beautifully etched three dimensional mythical scene of a male, a female and a cherub.
Very Good Condition. Length: 20 ½ inches overall
The silversmithing of this centerpiece is not only of exceptional workmanship, but the glass insert is of the highest quality as well. It is evident that his was owned by a family of the highest level of taste at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries most probably in Paris or another sophisticated French city.
