| This is a unique set of two sterling silver wine goblets with a matching sterling silver tray by the premier American silversmiths at Tiffany & Co. in a handsome 19th century design. Each goblet stands on a circular foot trimmed with an abstract border and supporting a plain, spreading stem. The cup of each goblet is divided into three sections with the bottom left undecorated, the center with a band of conforming abstract decoration, and the top portion which has been elaborately engraved with strapwork and conventional decoration surround a vacant cartouche and one with the monogram RTR. The matching oval tray stands on four lovely leaf and scroll bracket feet and has a stepped border with a vine design. The field of the tray has also been elaborately engraved to conform to the goblets and includes brilliant conventional decoration, arabesque scrolls, and a central bouquet of flowers that surmounts a cartouche with the inscription, “Presented to Russell Tomlinson, Esq. by the Board of Directors of the Nagatuck Railroad Company as a token of appreciation of his services while president of the company, 1869.” The engraving on each of these pieces is superb, enhanced by the heavy gauge of the silver and the architectural qualities of the design. Each piece in this set is in excellent condition, and the goblets retain their original gold wash interiors. Each goblet measures approx. 6 3/4” high, and 3” in diameter, and the tray measures approx. 1 ½” high, 16” long, and 12” wide. The tray is marked with the maker’s mark of Tiffany & Co., the words English Sterling 925-1000, 550 Broadway, pattern number 1427, order number 3272, and two Gothic letter Ms that indicate the piece was made by Edward C. Moore, Tiffany’s leading designer; each goblet is marked with Tiffany’s maker’s mark, the words Quality 925-1000, pattern number 1673, and order number 3656, and a Gothic letter M also to indicate that the pieces were made by Moore.
