Sale Price: $18,200.00
Listed Price $28,000.00

This is an impressive and most unusual Victorian presentation trophy, beautifully made of sterling silver gilt in the form of an amphora vase and handsomely decorated all around with a wide frieze of acid-etched decoration depicting Greco-Romano scenes set between assorted bands of both abstract and geometric forms. At the base of the neck, between the gracefully curving handles, an inscription in large, distinctively shaded upper case letters boldly proclaims the words “Wexford Hunt Club Challenge Cup”. The entire surface of the trophy has been superbly enhanced by decoration made to the very highest standards, the most detailed design depicting a series of men and their horses encircling the center of the vase above a wide band of decoration featuring the Greek Key motif. The men are dressed in classical tunics and cloaks and both they and their equine companions have been meticulously rendered with great skill and precision, their poses and clothing accurately invoking the decorative forms found on the pottery and vases of Ancient Greece. The trophy’s shapely silhouette also takes its form from the ancient world and the decoration effectively continues this theme to create a timeless and stylish classic that would add a touch of elegant sophistication to any setting. It is in excellent condition throughout with a lovely soft warm coloration on the silver gilt and crisp, clear definition on all the many and varied decorative elements. It has been clearly stamped on the prettily decorative neck with a full set of English hallmarks showing that it was made in London by the renowned silversmiths Ezekiel and Emanuel Emanuel in 1866. This is a one of a kind museum piece of superlative quality and would be of particular interest to anyone with a connection to the Irish town of Wexford or any connoisseur of classical Greco-Romano design at its very best. It weighs a substantial 112 troy ounces and measures approx. 11” in diameter at its widest point x 22” tall.
