| This is an exceptional sterling silver wine goblet by the premier nineteenth-century silversmiths Ball, Black & Co. with elegant neoclassical and Renaissance Revival style ornament. Standing on a circular base with a beaded border and engraved with Eastlake-style designs and strapwork, this goblet has an architecturally-shaped stem with Greek keys bands on each side with a high, banded knop that supports a U-shaped cup. The cup is decorated with overlapping leaves on the bottom quarter with decoration in bands above including a wide band with grape vines and putti and satyrs playing instruments and parading centering an elaborate strapwork cartouche with the inscription “Our Mutual Friend B. Simon Esq. as a token of esteem.” The band is flanked with delicately engraved strapwork and bellflowers. A Greek Key band and beaded border surround the rim of the goblet as well. This very handsome design has a wonderful geometric sensibility and a modern silhouette. This goblet is in excellent condition with its goldwash interior and has been decorated with the utmost skill. It measures approx. 7 3/4” high, and its opening measures approx. 3 1/2” in diameter. It is marked under the base with the mark of Ball, Black & Co., and 925/1000.
