| This is an exceptional sterling silver tureen and stand by premier American silversmiths at Gorham in a timeless Georgian design. This lovely tureen stands on a low, oval pedestal base decorated with foliage and spiral gadrooning. The lobed oval body is trimmed with a conforming band accented with delicate flowers. Two C-scroll handles are attached to the body and rim with leafy joints. The domed and lobed cover conforms to the shape of the body and is topped with a bracket-shaped handle with scroll, leaf, and shell embellishment. This beautiful tureen has its original shaped oval stand with a conforming lobed rim and border with spiral gadrooning and small flower accents. Each piece is in excellent condition and has been crafted from very heavy gauge with very finely executed decoration. The tureen measures approx. 10” high to the top of the handle, approx. 15” long over the side handles, and approx. 8” wide, and the stand measures approx. 17 ¼” long and 12 ½” wide. Each is marked under the base with the mark of Gorham Manufacturing Co., and the word Sterling, and the tureen has pattern number A470, 2 PINT, the number 2, and the date symbol for 1899, and the stand has pattern number A475, 16 IN, and the date symbol for 1898. This large antique silver tureen and stand is a wonderful example of traditional silver design that would make a statement on any finely laid table, and its large size makes this an exception serving piece.
