| This is an exceptional sterling silver tureen by the premier American silversmiths at Tiffany & Co. in an exotic design with Eastern influence. Standing on a shaped and bracketed base with applied flowers at each side accenting the cut out designs of the base that produce an architectural affect this tureen has a bold form mixed with elegant decoration of chinoiserie taste. The lobed oval body is trimmed with a border of floral, leaf and poppy bud designs with two bracket side handles embellished with a central abstract scroll motif and chicken-heads in profile on each side. The domed and lobed cover conforms to the shape of the body and is topped with a shaped oval handle with scroll, leaf, and flower embellishment. This unusual exotic decoration was the height of fashion at the end of the nineteenth century, representing the best taste and craftsmanship. It is in excellent condition and is a very heavy gauge with very finely executed decoration. It approx. 11” high to the top of the handle, approx. 16” long over the side handles, and approx. 8” wide. It is marked under the base with the mark of Tiffany & Co., the words Makers, Sterling Silver 925-1000, pattern number 4627, order number 1901, and the letter M for Edward C. Moore, head of Tiffany’s design from 1873-1891. This gorgeous antique silver tureen is uncommonly chic.
