ANTIQUE ENGLISH SILVER AND CRYSTAL YACHT PITCHER 1876

This is a stylish and elegant clear crystal presentation pitcher handsomely mounted in fine quality sterling silver and originally awarded to the winner of a prestigious yacht race held in 1875. As befits the winner of a maritime event, the hinged silver lid has been appropriately crowned with a finial in the shape of an anchor neatly accentuated by a silver chain. The anchor sits atop the lid in a small circle surrounded by narrow rows of delicate engraved work in a neo-Classical pattern. A border of gadroon work outlines the upper rim and pouring lip and tops a wide silver band which has been prettily enhanced by a continuation of the engraving design on the lid, this time in a slightly more intricate pattern featuring the addition of dainty fan motifs. Another band of silver encircles the pitcher where the base of the silver handle is attached. It has been handsomely engraved between a pair of decorative etched lines in upper case characters with the words “Yacht “Nameless” Capt. E. Stephens R.E. Commodore Royal Bermuda Y.C. Winner of H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh’s Challenge Cup May, 1875”. The entire surface of the crystal has been attractively covered with a neat geometric pattern of small etched stars which provide a discreetly elegant counterpoint to the silver elements. The silver is in very fine condition with an extremely pleasing patina and the glass is clear and unclouded. The lid and the larger of the decorative silver bands have each been stamped with a set of English hallmarks which show that the silver was made in Sheffield by the silversmith Harry Wright Atkin in 1876. This distinctive and unusual presentation piece has a distinguished pedigree and would make a wonderful gift for any lover of boats and sailing in addition to any connoisseurs of fine quality silver-mounted crystal. It measures approx. 4 ½” in diameter at the base and stands approx. 10 ½” tall to the top of the anchor finial.   Price: $4,950.00   Stock #BC465
