ANTIQUE SILVER OVERLAY 2 RED PERFUMES CIRCA 1900

This is a magnificent matching pair of large American ruby red crystal perfume bottles which have been expertly and beautifully embellished with fine quality sterling silver overlay in the Art Nouveau style. They each have an aesthetically pleasing rounded silhouette topped by a large round stopper and have been crafted from a most attractive and deeply saturated shade of a warm red hue which is extremely appealing to the eye. This lovely warm coloration has been finely enhanced by the contrast of the cool color of the silver overlay which swirls sinuously all around the surface, accentuating and complementing the bottles’ curving shapes. The heavy gauge sterling silver design consists of entwined tendrils which artfully surround both the bottles and their stoppers with the whiplash curves that define the exuberant essence of the Art Nouveau style. At the front of each bottle a pair of these tendrils culminates at each end in a large and intricately made pretty wind-blown leaf. These pairs of leaves each flank a shield-shaped cartouche which has been engraved with an elaborate 2-letter monogram which, although slightly worn with age, appears to be the letters GF. The quality of the craftsmanship is first rate throughout with nice detailing on all the silver overlay decoration. Both bottles are in excellent condition. There are no maker’s marks visible anywhere which is no cause for concern as many pieces of silver overlay, even fine quality pieces like these, were often left unmarked. Their large size, the heavy gauge of the silver overlay and the gorgeous coloration of the glass is evidence of the fact that they were obviously made to the highest of standards by a skilled craftsperson and would have been highly regarded when new. To have one bottle with all these attributes is very desirable, but to have a pair is both rare and especially noteworthy. These are worthy of a place in any collection of silver and silver overlay and would also make a wonderful, and very special, addition to any vanity area. Each bottle stands approx. 7 ½” tall to the top of the stopper and measures approx. 5” in diameter at its widest point.   Price: $9,500.00pair   Stock # BC714
