| This is a charming and unusual sterling silver centerpiece bowl by New York silversmiths Wood & Hughes in a splendid Victorian design. This oval centerpiece bowl stands on an oval, pedestal base and has a low, rounded body. The base and rim are trimmed with a laurel garland border. The bowl has two angular side handles accented at the bottom with a coin-like medallion of a Roman soldier in profile, and anchored to the bowl with two magnificent figural busts in oval medallions flanked by openwork scrolls. The busts are a man and a woman in the contemporary dress of the Victorian era including hats; each is finely detailed and life-like having been executed in high, sculptural relief. This bowl is in fine condition with its original gold wash interior with only minor wear at the bottom. It is monogrammed on one side with the initials G.E.S. It measures approx. 6 ¼” high and 13 1/4” long over the handles, and weighs approx. 24 troy ounces. It is marked under the base with the mark of Wood & Hughes, and the word Sterling. This charming centerpiece bowl is a wonderful example of Victorian design and a striking example of work by these well-known nineteenth century silversmiths. A true collectible!
