| This is a fabulous English clear crystal decanter, beautifully decorated with fine quality sterling silver around its upper rim, lid and handle.
The main body has been constructed of pristine clear crystal which has been sharply and expertly cut into an intricate pattern of diamond shapes.
These have all been multifacetted to ensure maximum light refraction and to guarantee extra sparkle.
The decanter flares out gently towards the base where its perimeter has been prettily encircled by a single row of geometric motifs cut into a complementary pattern.
A star emblem has been deeply cut into the underside of the base.
A narrow band of decorated sterling silver creates additional visual interest at the point where the base of the gracefully arched silver handle attaches to the crystal.
This same decorated band has been repeated at the top of the decanter where it runs beneath the ornately decorated sterling silver motifs, effectively creating an attractive border to showcase the beauty of the lovely cut crystal decoration.
The sterling silver decoration consists of a wide frieze containing a profusion of meticulously-crafted grape clusters and leaves.
This completely surrounds the upper portion of the decanter and its pouring lip and then winds sinuously and artistically along the length of the handle.
On each side of the decanter, a face has been inserted amidst the foliage of the circular band; a curly-haired youth on one side and a bearded Dionysian figure on the other.
The hinged lid has been embellished with a shell motif on each side of the hinge and has been enhanced at the center by a repousse design of grapes and leaves.
The border repeats the same design that appears above and below the cut crystal of the main body.
In a charming and whimsical touch, the finial atop the lid has been designed in the form of an exquisitely-detailed lion standing upright on his hind legs, his tail arching behind him and a distinctly agreeable expression on his face as if to sy "Look how clever I am!.
The decanter is in perfect condition; the crystal is clean with no chips or damage and the silver has been beautifully crafted and is crisply defined on all the decorative elements.
A full set of English hallmarks is visible amongst the decoration and shows that the decanter was made in London in 1902.
The initials of its maker CB, probably Charles Boyton, are also present.
This is a lovely piece, not only superbly decorated but also functional and sure to add a touch of sophistication and elegance to any dining area.
It stands approx. 11 1/2" tall and measures approx. 5" in diameter at the base. Price: $8,500.00 Stock #BC153 |
