TIFFANY STERLING SILVER AND MIXED METAL SHAKER SET

These salt and pepper shakers are a beautiful example of Tiffany & Co.’s acclaimed sterling silver and mixed metalwork and are charmingly decorated in the exotic style of the Aesthetic movement. Each gourd-shaped cylindrical body has a rich hand hammered surface in the Japanese taste. Both have identical decoration of a mixed-metal gourd attached to a curling vine with leaves, also with a mixed metal leaf, and an applied silver butterfly. These artistic scenes are rendered asymmetrically and naturalistically, inspired by the style of Japanese prints widely admired in the 19th century. Both have detachable cap lids that have been pierced and include an inlay of copper in a geometric design. Each shaker is stamped under the base with the maker’s mark of Tiffany & Co., the words Sterling Silver and Other Metals, pattern numbers 5183 M 1259 and 327, each lid is also stamped with a number. The M in the pattern number is for Edward C. Moore, head of Tiffany’s design department and used from 1873-1891. Both measure approx. 2 1/2" high, and are in excellent condition. This charming shaker set is a wonderful example of Tiffany’s eclectic style and would make a lovely addition to any silver collection.Circa 1880   Price: $6,000.00 pr.   Stock #BB481
