| Here is a lovely clear crystal wine decanter beautifully decorated with sterling silver overlay in an unusual and distinctive design and presented as a prize by the Baltimore Country Club in 1911.
It has an indented garlic bulb-shaped base and has been prettily decorated all around the body with silver overlay grape clusters surrounded by leaves.
Each of these motifs has been separated by strips of sterling silver which form a petal-like pattern as they rise upwardds, growing ever wider as they do so.
As they reach the base of the neck they form a long narrow column of plain silver.
This has been topped by an elegantly-elongated stopper of clear crystal divided by sterling silver strips into 4 sections, each embellished by a burch of silver overlay grapes suspended from a leafy vine.
At the base of the silver neck where the shapely silver lines converge is a neatly engraved inscription. "The Baltimore Country Club, May 18th, 19th, 20th 1911, Winner Second Sixteen won by T.S. Lippy".
The silver overlay is of very fine quality and is marked on the base with a pattern number, 999/1000. Fine and the identifying mark of the Alvin Corp. of Providence, R.I., makers of some of the very best sterling silver overlay in existence.
This is a handsome and unusual decanter, beautifully made by a highly-esteemed company and with an obviously interesting history.
It stands approx. 13" tall to the top of the stopper and measures approx. 5 1/2" in diameter at the base and would make a wonderful gift for a wine enthusiast. Price: $3,000.00 Stock #AR425 |
