| An exquisite example of the Japanese style in 19th-century silver by Gorham, this sterling silver and mixed metal serving spoon beautifully combines several exotic motifs. The hand-hammered surface of the handle has been embellished with a scene of a mixed metal bird flying above a seascape of mixed metal trees and water formed with applied granulated silver balls. The elongated and shaped bowl has been beautifully engraved with bamboo, leaf, and stylized patterns that have been accented with bright cutting. The bowl retains its rich, matte-gilt finish. The reverse of the handle has been monogrammed with the letter O, and the dates 1856 and 1881, and it has been stamped with the maker’s mark of the Gorham Manufacturing Co., and the words Sterling & Other Metals. The spoon measures approx. 8 3/4" long, and it is in excellent condition with very crisp decoration. This serving spoon is a stunning example of Gorham’s expert silversmithing at the height of its experimentation with exotic techniques and design influences. Price: $1,500.00 Stock #AM171 |
