| A beautiful example of Gorham’s Aesthetic-style silver, this three piece set of salt and pepper shakers and a condiment jar features exquisite decoration in the Japanese taste. Both shakers have an elegant vase-shaped body with a long neck. The sterling silver bodies are banded to create a textured and lustrous surface, which has been ornamented with applied mixed metal motifs. One shaker features a crab, floating entwined lily-pads and pods, and a seascape of lily-pads and seagrass on a granulated mixed metal bed with a little fish. The other is decorated with a thorny rose branch with a bud, and an elegant bamboo branch with a crawling beetle on a granulated ground. Both have plain, detachable flat lids that have been beautifully pierced in a starburst and square motif. The condiment jar has an urn-shaped body with two playful fish, and a patch of seagrass. Each scene is artistically rendered and demonstrates the various popular design sources of the late 19th century. Each piece is stamped under the base with the identifying marks of the Gorham Manufacturing Co., the words Sterling & Other Metals, and pattern numbers 1685 M and 4, each lid is also stamped with a number. Both measure approx. 4" high, and are in very good condition overall. The base of the jar and each lid has been engraved with a monogram SMH and the date 1882. This unique condiment set would make a striking addition to any table, and are a lovely example of the eclecticism of mixed metal silver. Price: $4,950.00 Stock #AW387 |
