| This elegant and unusual sterling silver and mixed metal oil lamp is a truly unique item! Designed by premier American silversmiths the Gorham Manufacturing Company, this teapot represents the exoticism of the Japanese taste in the 19th century. The dramatically shaped low circular body has an elongated spout and plain, high-arched shaped silver handle. The surface of the body has been deeply hammered, tapering to the base in a highly decorative manner. Applied mixed metal decoration playfully enhances the surface, and the body of the oil lamp features a lion (buffalo?), camel, crane, and another bird. These exotic beasts are artistically rendered and demonstrate the vogue for eclectic designs in the late 19th century. The plain, circular detachable lid has a beehive finial that attaches to the spout with a silver chain and is weighted on the other end. The oil lamp is stamped under the base with the maker’s mark of the Gorham Manufacturing Co., the pattern number 51 P, and the words “Sterling & Other Metals.” The oil lamp measures approx. 5" long over the spout and handle, and the diameter of the base is approx. 1 7/8”. It is in excellent condition overall with a beautiful hammered surface. This rare piece is a wonderful example of mixed metal silver by premier American silversmiths. Price: $2,500.00 Stock #BD659 |
