ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER OVERLAY COLOGNE BOTTLE, C.1890
| Here is something distinctive and different; a square-shaped American cologne bottle made from clear crystal with an unusual undulating design and lavishly-decorated with Sterling Silver overlay.
This rare-form of glass combined with the exceptional and unusual style of the silver overlay makes a unique and stunning object. The silver overlay is of an extremely heavy guage and is very closely spaced.
Each leaf and flower has been carefully accented with beautifully-crafted design details and the decoration has been cleverly applied to follow the indented curves of the glass so that the entire surface has a sense of swirling movement.
A thick band of silver surrounds the top of the 4 sides of the body which is separated from the plain sterling silver octagonal neck by a small raised platform decorated with more silver overlay flowers.
The base is marked Sterling and Alvin Mfg. Co., an early mark of the Alvin Corp of Providence, R.I. which made extremely high quality silver overlay items.
