French Etruscan Revival 950 silver coffeepot. Made by Jean Nicolas Boulanger in Paris. Baluster with hinged and raised cover, ebonized wood side handle, “fish mouth” spout, and 3 hoof supports. Chased laurel wreaths and leaf swags at bottom, and fruiting grapevines at top. On front a horned and bearded satyr’s head. Cover has leaf-and-dart and imbricated leaf borders as well as beaded swags. Old-fashioned gracefulness with up-to-date, nouveau régime Classical vocabulary.

This piece was made during the Consulat, the period of Napoleon Bonaparte’s ascendancy that followed the turbulent years of anarchy and terror. The maker was active from the 1790s through the 1830s.

Fine craftsmanship and visible hand-hammering.

Fully marked including maker’s stamp and the rooster fineness stamp that was in use from 1798 to 1809. Very good condition with nice period patina.

Overall dimensions: H 9 1/4 x W 8 x D 4 in. Gross weight: 17.8 troy ounces. #BN984
