Sale Price: Sold

George III sterling silver tea turn. Made in London in 1801-9. Tapering body with reeded and leaf-mounted high-looping handles and stepped and reeded foot. Spout reeded with paterae and green hardstone twist tap in form of pelta (shield). Gilt interior. Domed cover with acorn finial and engraved armorial.

On urn back is engraved presentation to the heroic Captain Somerville for his “efficacious assistance and protection” of the Sophia Magdalena, a Swedish ship that was “drove ashore” and “in danger of being plundered of her cargo.” Very valuable that cargo must have been to merit such a precious token of thanks. A genteel (and teetotaling) gift in the fashionable Greek style.

The presentation reads in full: Presented to / Captn P. Somerville / as a small acknowledgement of his / efficacious assistance and protection / granted to the Swedish East India Company's ship / Sophia Magdalena / when she was drove on shore near / the South Foreland and bilged, / and in danger of being plundered / of her cargo. / By his obedient servants & obliged friends / Chalmers & Cowie / agents to the Swedish / East India Company.

Fully marked. Urn has date letter for 1801 and cover for 1809. Very good condition with period wear and rubbing.

Dimensions: H 12 1/4 x W 8 3/4 x D 5 5/8 in. Gross weight: 39.4 troy ounces. #AY585
