American sterling silver soup ladle, ca 1878. Tapering handle and shaped ovalish bowl. Stylized ornament. Arched terminal with chased cherub perched on scrolling tendrils, and oval frame (vacant). Bowl has engraved flowers, leaves, and scrolls. A charming piece in the advanced aesthetic taste. Indistinct maker’s mark - possibly New York maker Wood & Hughes, which had a line of stylish flatware. Hallmark includes patent date 1878. Very good condition.
