This is an Art Deco style 6 piece sterling silver tea and coffee set in the Fairfax pattern by Gorham Mfg.Co., Providence, RI, Circa 1965. The set is fully hallmarked on the underside of each piece. The sterling silver mug was made by Gorham Mfg. Co. of Providence, RI in 1901 and was retailed by Black, Starr & Frost. This mug is a prime example of the art of shaving from a bygone era. The mug is fully hallmarked with Gorham’s maker’s mark, Sterling, date mark for 1901, and pattern #A2587M on the underside of the base. This is an unusual English Sterling Silver Covered Shaving Mug, made during the Edward VII period in Sheffield, England in 1905. The mug retains its original sterling pierced liner for the soap. The lid, mug and liner are appropriately hallmarked. The body is mounted with a spout and geometric strap form handle. The whole is raised on 3 trefoil shaped feet. This is an unusual French Aesthetic style late 19th Century 1st Standard Silver (950/1000) Traveling Soap Box. Judging by the hand hammered style, the box would be contemporary to Aesthetic pieces made by Tiffany & Co., circa 1875. Perhaps this French silversmith was influenced by Tiffany’s exhibit at the 1878 Paris Exposition, where mixed metals and Japanese influenced silver works of art were displayed.
