In 1851, the Berndorf Metalware Factory instituted the electroplating process into their line of silverware production. At the same time, they developed a base metal to silver plate over consisting of copper, nickel and zinc. This new base metal was unique because as the plated surface wore, the base, because it was the same color as the plating, showed no evidence of wear. This is a very handsome 800 silver wine bottle holder with exceptionally fine quality repousse decoration. It has a distinctive streamlined silhouette and has been lavishly embellished all over with a lovely design of grape clusters, vines and leaves which dramatically and effectively showcases two charming repousse medallions on each side chronicling the journey of the wine from the vineyard to the table.
