This is a fine English Sterling Silver Gilt and Etched Crystal Decanter. A beautiful bulbous design mounted in sterling on the cover with a standing lion and shield, the lion is finely molded with a long mane very finely defined. Around the neck is a horned satyr* with a large and small beading above and below. The crystal body is finely etched with bunches of grapes and grape leaf. Cover is on a hinge. This regal pair of English Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Wine Coasters was made by the venerable London silversmith, Richard Sibley, in 1839. Each is fully marked around the rim of the foot, with the maker’s mark, lion passant sterling mark, leopard’s head for London, monarch’s mark of Queen Victoria, and the date letter “D” for 1839. This sterling silver mounted cut glass decanter was made by the silversmithing firm of Edward Streeter, London, in 1902. It is fully hallmarked on both the sterling silver hinged lid and collar. The cut glass body is cut in a hobnail motif with 4 heart shaped sections. The silver lid, collar and handle are repousse and chased with floral, scroll and foliate motifs.
