A lovely Antique American Sterling Silver Compote decorated with a classic applied acanthus leaf design and trimmed with a braid and floral border. The compote sits on a circular pedestal which is decorated with a simple gadroon design. Made by Tiffany & Co. Makers, New York, circa 1910. Fully Hallmarked with the “m” date mark. A pair of Antique American sterling silver compotes designed with a large pierced, star-like border and trimmed with a decorative applied scroll edge. The pedestals are of a simple circular design. Made by Gorham Corp., Providence, Rhode Island. Fully hallmarked, including the "airplane" stamp which dates the compotes at 1915. Excellent condition, nice patina 19.5 troy ounces, nice weight, the compotes measure 7 3/4" in diameter and stand 3" high.

This compote by Houghton, Ltd. is a specimen example of hand hammered silver produced in the Arts and Crafts period. The compote is marked “McCahill & Houghton Sterling” on the base, and “Houghton Ltd” on the interior rim of the base. The compote is entirely hand hammered, with the exception of the three sinuous cast handles connecting the bowl to the domed pedestal base. This is a prime example of the synergy of American silversmithing and American glassworks at its finest.
