Sterling silver gravy boats are also known as sauceboats or saucieres. They get their names because they hold a sauce and have a boat-shaped vessel. The first saucieres were double-lipped and double-handed up until the early 18th century. They have evolved into the convenient form we find them in today with a wide pouring lip and a single handle. Gravy boats are ornately decorated with the handle as a central feature and elaborate rims and feet. You’ll typically find sterling silver gravy boats supported by a single central foot, but the three feet sauceboats increased in popularity in the mid-1700s.
